GA 7th Carolyn Bourdeaux

Maybe we’ve watched one too many episodes of The West Wing, but here at Vote Like a Girl, we believe that the government should and can work to solve problems. We tend to lean toward policy over talking points when it comes to backing political candidates, that’s why we get particularly excited about candidates like Carolyn Bourdeaux, running for Congress in GA’s 7th.

Public service and solving problems through government have been Carolyn’s life’s work. After receiving a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and her Ph.D. in Public Administration with a focus on Public Finance, she started her career as an aide to Senator Ron Wyden, working on health care, education, women’s issues, social issues, and transportation. She has said of that time..., ‘one of the most important lessons I learned was how to stretch federal dollars so we could help people without leaving the next generation to drown in debt.’

Maybe it is just us girls, but isn’t that how every public official should be approaching public policy? Be smart, spend wisely, and do the most good for as many as you can.

After working on Senator Wyden’s team, Carolyn moved to GA where she has been a Professor at the Andrew Young School of Public Policy since 2003. From 2007 to 2010, she took a leave of absence to be Director of Georgia’s Senate Budget and Evaluation Office. There, she worked in a nonpartisan role to help the state balance the budget during the Great Recession and was even honored by Georgia’s Senate for her significant service to the state with Senate Resolution 1598.

Afterward, she returned to Andrew Young School, where she founded the Center for State and Local Finance to, as she put it: ‘teach the next generation of leaders about responsible and compassionate public policy.’

In a nutshell, Carolyn Bourdeaux is one smart cookie, who cares about people, good governance, and getting things done - right. Carolyn is running on a platform committed to:

  • Strengthening the Affordable Care Act and creating a robust affordable public option for individuals and small businesses

  • Confronting injustice with social justice and economic opportunity

  • Restoring our Democracy by securing fair and free elections, ending partisan gerrymandering, and fixing our broken campaign finance system

  • Increase opportunity in education, by investing in public education, making higher education more affordable, and investments in job training and universal pre-K

  • And that’s just the beginning...

Please take a few minutes to read through Carolyn’s platform and how she plans to tackle real problems with Gov't policy. If you are a fellow West Wing fan, get ready for a feel-good read, Carolyn Bourdeaux makes public policy INSPIRING again.
